Web Design

Whether or you are new to web design or have designed a few sites and want to learn more, we have classes that will help you add new skills to your web design expertise.

 

When building websites there are three different areas of expertise. There are Web Developers who will work with HTML and CSS for creating page layouts and content. There are Web Graphic Designers who build the graphic elements of web sites. And there are Web Programmers who provide the client-side and server-side interactivity

Beginner

Are you just starting out with web design? Then let's start with the basics.

 

HTML Jumpstart - This three-week course will teach you the basics of working with HTML. This is a good course to have if you plan to use tools like Dreamweaver, Expressions Web or Visual Studio for creating websites because a basic understanding of HTML is useful for any web design work.

 

Cool Web Pages with CSS and Layers - Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are what put the style in your web pages. This three-week course will give you an overview of what CSS can do.

 

Adobe Dreamweaver Introduction - Although you can buid web sites with just a text editor, large sites can be easier to maintain with a tool like Dreamweaver. In this course you will build websites in Dreamweaver that include text, graphics and CSS formatting.

 

Microsoft Expression Web - Another tool you can use for building and maintaining web sites is Microsoft's Expression Web. If you are already comfortable with the Microsoft products you'll find this an easy tool to begin using for web design.

 

Web Developers

If you have built a few sites and looking for ways to improve your web design skills, then these courses will give you some ideas for adding to your sites.

 

Building Accessible Web Sites - Accessibility is about making your sites usable by anyone, regardless of how they choose to view your site. This means making your site easy to use for the visually impaired as well as making your site available to the latest wireless gadget. Find out what kinds of things you can do to make your site more accessible.

 

Designing Web Sites with CSS - Take your site design to the next level by creating cool layouts using CSS. This course will cover formatting text, page layouts, and creating style sheets for printing and wireless displays.

 

HTML/XHTML Introduction - If you have only ever designed sites using tools like Dreamweaver and Expression Web, then learning HTML will help you move beyond the basics of web design. Whether you are doing CSS design, client-side programming with JavaScript or Ajax or server-side programming with PHP or ASP.NET, knowing HTML will make your web design work easier.

 

User Friendly Web Design - Building a great website is more than creating content and making it pretty. It needs to be something your visitors can use and understand. Learn what it takes to build a user-friendly web site.

Web Graphics Designer

Have you been looking enviously at the cool graphics and animations on other web sites? Learn what it takes to build cool web graphics and interactive animations.

 

Fireworks - Fireworks is designed to create graphics for web pages and to graphically design page layouts that you can convert into HTML. It integrates well with Dreamweaver and the other Adobe web design applications.

 

Flash: Creating Cool Buttons - In this three-week course you will get a quick overview of the features of Flash that you will use to build cool interactive buttons for your website.

 

Flash Introduction - This course will get you well on your way to building interactive websites and animations using Flash and ActionScript. Create animations, buttons, and interative applications.

 

Photoshop Jumpstart - This three-week course will introduce you to the basic skills you need to edit photographs in Photoshop.

Web Programmers

Web programmers create the exciting interactive web sites that are becoming more common. Web programmers can program on the client-side using JavaScript, Ajax, or Flash animations. On the server-side, web programmers may use ASP, ColdFusion, PHP or JSP to create web pages that interact with a database.

Client-Side Scripting

Adobe Flex Introduction - Adobe Flex is a programming environment for building Flash animations. Learn to display data in Flash controls and build custom controls and drag and drop interactions.

 

Building Interactive Web Sites with CSS, DHTML and Ajax - Using JavaScript, XML, CSS and HTML you can build web pages that update without having to send the page back to the server. In this course you will learn CSS, DHTML (Dynamic HTML) and Ajax for bulding interactive web pages.

 

Flash ActionScripting - Once you have the basics of Flash mastered, move onto buidling interactive animation using Flash. Learn to work server-side scripts, movies and more.

 

JavaScript Introduction - JavaScript is the scripting language that runs in the browser and provides the functionality of menus, rollovers and more. Learn to program in JavaScript even if you have never programmed before.

Server-side Scripting

Ajax Introduction - Ajax combines XML, JavaScript, CSS and HTML to interact with PHP scripts on the server so that we can update parts of a web page without sending the entire page back the server. This course focuses on building Ajax scripts to work with PHP scripts on the server side.

 

ASP.NET using C# and ASP.NET using Visual Basic .NET - Create web sites that interact with a database using ASP.NET. You will learn to create password protected pages, create master pages and more.

 

ColdFusion Introduction - Learn to use this powerful but easy to use server-side scripting language to display data on a web page. You will learn to update the database, keep track of users using cookies, application variables and session data.

 

Dreamweaver Advanced - If you will be doing web programming with ASP, PHP, ColdFusion or JSP, then learn to use the features of Dreamweaver that can make your development work easier. Learn the basics of server-side scripting with Dreamweaver.

 

Java Server Pages (JSP) - Learn to create interactive web sites using Java. Students will create JSP pages, Servlets and Java Beans using Java Enterprise Edition tools.

 

PERL Scripting for the Web - PERL was one of the original server-side scripting language and is still used today. Learn how to create PERL scripts and objects for use on the web.

 

PHP Web Programming - Learn to use PHP to handle form data and interact with the database. This course provides new web programmers a foundation in server-side scripting. This course is good for new programmers.
